Will Perkins passed away last Saturday (Oct. 19) at the age of 91. A lot of people think the title “man of God” is reserved for people in vocational ministry, but that’s not true. Will was a businessman. He guided Perkins Motors over in Motor City for 3 decades, was a leader in the movement to pass Amendment 2 in Colorado back in the 1990s, and a faithful lay leader at his local church. Will loved the Lord. He set the standard in Colorado Springs for integrity in the auto sales business – a business universally known for shady dealings. He stood tall in the fight for Amendment 2 – a religious liberty and equality amendment – that was eventually and unfortunately struck down by the Supreme Court. He took a lot of heat for that stand – still does, but he stood firm on the principles we hold dear. I didn’t know him well, but I had a couple of occasions to interact with Will. He met me the first time I prayed at City Council early in my ministry here and encouraged me in that endeavor. He was always a gracious man. He wanted his life to count for Christ. His race has ended, but he has passed the baton…to us.
