No one is all that he can be for Christ the moment he becomes a Christian. Instinctively, we understand that. Everyone needs to grow up spiritually, just as we need to grow up physically. However, unlike physical growth, that takes place over the first 20 or so years of life then levels off, spiritual growth is designed to continue until we graduate to the presence of the Lord. Peter describes a process in II Peter 1 that looks a lot like a ladder. We start with faith, then we add virtue, followed by knowledge, then self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness and finally love. We keep stepping up the ladder toward a more Christlike life. We never stop growing in our faith (the first step), and we should never stop adding the rest of the steps as long aswe live. “Add to your faith…” It’s how we grow up.
