I’m reading a book called “Working the Angles”. In the book, the author, Eugene Peterson, draws a distinction between what is written on the pages of the Bible and the Word of God. He is not trying to diminish God’s written word in any way; he simply wants to point out that until the printing press, most people in the world down through the centuries heard the Word of God. They did not read it for themselves. They could not. There were not nearly enough copies and in any event, most people could not read. They heard the Word of God read to them, as if God was speaking to them Himself through the voice of the one reading. There is something to that. God didn’t set out to create a book; He set out to communicate from His heart to ours. As you read (or listen to) God’s Word, listen for the voice of God in the Words on the page. He’s speaking to you.
