There is a lot of discussion in evangelical circles – even Regular Baptist circles – today on the subject of worship. What is it? What should it look like? To whom is it directed? The answer to that last question seems obvious to anyone who is taught in the Bible. Worship is directed to God. But is that really the focus of modern evangelical worship? Is God the object and the focus of worship? Is our worship vertical? Or are we focused on reaching the lost with our “worship”? Are we focused on pleasing congregations steeped in pop culture? Have we become horizontal? Do we direct our worship to God Himself or is He a passive observer as we reach out to each other? There is no question that our worship should build up the believers, but that will happen as we honor God. It’s not a given that God will be honored as we bypass Him and try to please each other.
