That phrase refers to the stuff that’s going on back stage during a performance – the stuff you can’t see that has to happen in order for the performance to take place. We live in a material world – very physical and earthy. That’s what we see every day. But every now and then in Scripture, the Holy Spirit pulls back the curtain so we can see what’s going on “behind the scenes” – in the realm of the spiritual. That happened, for instance, in parts of Genesis 1-2, in the first two chapters of Job and several times in the last half of Daniel. It also happens in I Peter 3:18-20, our passage for this morning’s message. Something happened after Jesus died on the cross. Peter mentions it in vv. 19-20 and we get a peek behind the scenes. God is in action in our lives in things we can see and experience, but He is also active beyond our lines of sight, accomplishing His will “behind the scenes.”
