I recently read the passage in Acts 19 where people in Ephesus who had turned from their pagan ways to faith in Christ brought their “magic” books and burned them “in the sight of all.” The word translated “magic” conveys the idea of “superstitious activities” – things people did because they were “curious” about the occult. The value of the books was “50,000 pieces of silver” – each one likely representing a day’s wage. Such a book-burning display today would shock our pluralistic and tolerant culture. It would be all over the evening news. It seems that today, no thought, no printed material no matter how repulsive should be subject to destruction. But these new believers understood instinctively that dabbling in the magic arts was counterproductive to living for Christ. What’s hanging around your house that pulls you away from the Lord? Are willing to be rid of it to live for your Savior?
