I borrowed that descriptive concept from an April 23 Newsmax article. The article described a Gentlemen’s Quarterly (GQ) list entitled, “21 Books You Don’t Have To Read.” It shows up in the May, 2018 edition of the popular men’s magazine. On the list were such literary stalwarts as The Old Man and the Sea, The Lord of the Rings, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (twice!), Gulliver’s Travels…and The Bible. While the staff at GQ had caustic things to say about a number of the entries (“misogynistic gender roles,” “masculine bluster,” “driest, boringest [sic] tomes,”etc.), they reserved the strongest criticism for God’s Word. “It is repetitive, self-contradictory, sententious, foolish, and even at time ill-intentioned. …certainly not the finest thing that man has ever produced.” Some have passed this off as “all in good fun,” but the vitriol is not just another day at Comedy Central. The GQ staff seem to relish the idea of a world without Moses, David and Paul. They may not have a bonfire going out back, but publishing the notion that this is a book you would do well to avoid comes pretty close. GQ notwithstanding, the Bible is one of the most amazing documents ever produced – 66 separate books compiled by over 40 authors over a span of 1500 years that is not contradictory. To the contrary, the Bible is the consistent story of God’s work to bring mankind back to Himself. It has been the best seller in the world for decades. Nothing else even comes close. It has inspired, comforted, convicted and motivated people, cultures and nations for millennia. It has also been the book God has used to bring countless millions to faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. If you don’t read anything else, this is one book you must read!
