We kind of know what church should look like. There should be a way for us to teach and preach God’s Word. We should care about each other. We should help believers to grow up as Christians. We should be telling others about Jesus. We should worship God. That’s what our Mission Statement says. That’s what the purpose paragraph in our Constitution says. Those are all good things. But what makes it possible for us to do those things? What is essential in church? There are a couple of “greats” in the New Testament – the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. The Great Commandment teaches us to love the Lord supremely and our neighbor as ourselves. It is essential that a church family loves God and others. The Great Commission teaches us to make disciples and train them up to be godly followers of Jesus. It is essential that we proclaim the Gospel and help believers to grow. We need to have our hearts in the right place, and we need to reproduce. Affection and Discipleship. That’s healthy. That’s essential.
