He was just a kid when he got on the train to leave for boot camp…barely 18 and full of fight. He waved to his mom and dad from the window as the train pulled out of the station. Dad’s chest was swelling with pride and mom was crying and waving. After weeks of training, he shipped overseas…and he never came home. He died at San Juan Hill or in the trenches of Belleau Wood. He died on the beaches of Normandy or Iwo Jima. He died in the cockpit of his P-51 over Germany, or on board the USS South Dakota. He died at Inchon or in the jungles of Vietnam, or the deserts of Iraq, or the hills of Afghanistan. Tens of thousands of boys left home to defend this country and never came back. This weekend is a time to remember their sacrifice. Along with everything else you do…remember. “Greater love hath no man than this: that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
