This week, Governor Polis signed a bill establishing a commission whose purpose will be to make history education in Colorado schools more inclusive of minorities. That includes racial as well as sexual/gender minorities. It remains to be seen how this will play out in the public schools, but based on the proposed make-up of the commission, I suspect that the Judeo-Christian heritage we share as Americans will be pushed even further out of sight. We didn’t hear much about this bill or the commission it sets up, but it has the potential to radically alter the content of American History education in every public school. Kids will likely learn a lot more about Harvey Milk, Bill Ayers and Angela Davis, but may miss lessons about the Pilgrims, the Founding Fathers and the Constitution. This nation was founded on Christian principles. Kids growing up in Colorado schools in the years to come may never hear about that.
