“Don’t tell pastor, but I drink a beer once in a while and enjoy a glass of wine with a meal. I don’t drink a lot, just occasionally. It’s good for you, you know. Light or even moderate drinking decreases the risk of heart attack. Besides, it calms me down.” Conventional wisdom, bolstered by recent, highly publicized studies, have encouraged light to moderate alcohol consumption on the basis of its supposed health benefits. However, a recent study, touted as “the most comprehensive estimate of the global burden of alcohol use to date” begs to differ. They found that “the protective effect of alcohol was offset by the risks. The study attributes 2.8 million premature deaths worldwide each year to booze.” Together with the World Health Organization, the “consortium of more than 500 experts” advise that “less is better, none is best.” Do you knock one back once in a while and rationalize that it won’t hurt you, and might even be good? Maybe it’s time to take the biblical advice to heart. “Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” (Prov. 20:1 ESV)
