The second full paragraph of the Declaration of Independence begins, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It goes on to say that the role of government is not to grant these rights but to secure them – to ensure that they are not breached. These three – Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness – are not the only unalienable rights, but they are leading examples of rights every human being has from God. The first one mentioned is Life. The government of the United States in our era has decided it can ignore this unalienable right and deprive unborn children of the right to live. They have decided this on the meritless grounds that an unborn child is not yet a person. As Jefferson recognized, God is the Creator of life. God is the author of life. No government has the right to take life without due cause. It is our “unalienable right” to receive the gift of life from God without government interference. That’s why we who are Christians stand for life. It is not a gift from the government. It is the gift of God.
