The Great Commission of Matthew 28:19-20 is often condensed to a single command… ”Go!” The use of that one word emphasizes the urgency of spreading the Gospel. However, the focus of the Great Commission is actually three-fold, and none of the imperative terms are “Go”. The three commands are 1.) “make disciples out of all nations”, 2.) “baptize them”, and 3.) “teach them”. In other words, lead people to Christ, and help them begin their Christian walk. The Great Commission involves evangelism, but it also involves instruction within the context of a local church. Where does the “go” fit in? A literal translation would read, “As you are going…” In other words, Jesus assumed the “go” part of the commission. Every believer would be out in the world. It’s what we do when we are among the lost every day that counts.
