In 1932, a group of churches separated from the Northern Baptist Convention for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the Convention’s tolerance of theological liberalism. The new group came to be known as the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches – the GARBC. Fast forward to 2019. The United Methodist Church attempted to find middle ground on the issue of homosexuality and the ordination of same-sex attracted clergy. That proposal failed in large part because United Methodists from around the world who believe in God’s design for marriage and sexuality took a stand. Just last week, the denomination decided the only viable path forward was separation. It appears that a new Methodist group will be formed that holds to the biblical definition of marriage and the “traditional” Methodist view of other important Christian doctrines. While we are not Methodists, and we would not endorse everything the new denomination will teach, we can applaud the desire of genuine believers within the denomination to hold to biblical truth in the face of strong pressure to compromise.
