We’re pretty familiar with political liberalism. We hear it and see it every day in America. But most of us are probably a little fuzzy on what it means to be a theological, or religious, liberal. (Today, they might be called“progressives”). We kind of know they don’t believe like us. But most of us are probably not aware that they thrive on the same denial as to your garden variety atheist. They are naturalists. Liberals don’t accept the Bible as the infallible Word of God. They tend to believe in evolution (at least some iteration of it) and discount things like Noah’s flood, Jonah’s great fish or Jesus’ resurrection. They deny that miracles happen or that they ever did. They deny that Jesus was (is) God. They don’t know if there is a heaven and they’re quite sure there is no hell. They are all about the here and now and how we “Christians” can make the world a better place. Liberalism has abandoned the clear teaching of God’s Word in favor of a pseudo-scientific compromise. As J. Gresham Machen pointed out almost a century ago, “Modern liberalism…is un-Christian…” Unhappily, 21stcentury liberalism has crept into 21st-century evangelical churches and schools. The dangers are at our doorstep. Peter’s warnings regarding false teachers are as relevant today as they ever were. Let’s be vigilant. Liberalism, by whatever name you call it, is alive and well.
