In 1973, the Supreme Court wrestled with the concept of abortion, and much of the discussion during those deliberations centered around the concept of life. What is life? When does it start? Should it be defined according to viability or quality? Should it be defined scientifically? If so, what does that entail? Unhappily, the Supreme Court took little notice of the Bible’s descriptions of life. If they had, they would have noted that life and personhood does indeed begin at conception (Jer. 1:5; Luke 1:41-44), that God is the author of life (Gen. 1-2) and that He is pro-life at every stage (Deut. 30:14, 19). Life is not simply a biological function that can be preserved or discarded at the whim of arrogant humans. It is a gift from God to the little one in the womb, to the parents who conceived her, and to the person living in the twilight years. It is a relationship with the Giver and Sustainer of life – a relationship we should cherish, not destroy.
