At the end of World War II, Roman Catholicism was far and away from the largest religious group in the world with 391 million adherents worldwide. Hinduism was in second place with 234 million and Protestant Christianity was third with 161 million. All forms of Islam had less than 70 million followers. In the 85 years since that time, Sunni Islam has soared to first place and it’s not close. Sunni Muslims now claim 1.522 billion followers worldwide. Shia Islam adds another 211 million. Islam has grown from less than 70 million adherents in 1945 to nearly 1.750 billion in 2019. Hinduism has soared from 391 million to 1.160 billion to remain in second place. All forms of “Christianity” have grown but at a much slower pace. Who’s reaching the world?
